Henderson, Kentucky is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. Henderson was founded by James Henderson in 1851. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Henderson is the county seat of Hardin County. The community is located in the Western Part of the state. It lies on KY Route 36 and is about 20 miles west-southwest of Lexington. The first known settlement in what is now Henderson was established about 1851 when James Henderson moved from nearby Overton to start a new life hereabouts after being frustrated as an unsuccessful land speculator in Illinois. After some initial struggle, he quickly got things going with his own business - selling goods door to door and doing some general farming for himself and his family until 1861 when he organized what became Union County (later Hardin) Circuit Court; this office still exists as does part of its staff which currently includes four judges: one assigned each to Districts 1-3 (the Eastern Parts of Hardin), District 4 (the Western Parts), and District 5 (Central). In 1865 he married Sarah Sibley, daughter of George Sibley II., who had settled thereabouts some time earlier with her husband Samuel Stephenson prior to that date. They raised three children - James H., Mary L., and John P.—until Sarah’s death in 1886 following a long illness at age 60 years old while mothering six boys—James P., Arthur Wagoner Sr., Hiram Akins Jr., Parmenio Mixon, Parley J. Middleton—together with their father’s two sisters: Martha Ballard Wilkinson and Jane Jenson Ballard; all six survived into adulthood except Parmenio who predeceased his mother by only a few months after her birth on December 12th 1870 at age 10 years old; intrepid marine aviator/pilot John Fenton Mahoney also lived through these difficult times as did pharmacist Druella McMullen later Mrs.(John) Mahoney who operated Herndon Drug Store on Main Street in present day Henderson from 1951 until her retirement from that enterprise during 2006; postmaster general Lucius Clay Maury served as First Class Mail Carrier for Henderson between 1922 and 1959 In 1923Hardin County became one district within newly created Boyd County after much discussion over consolidation efforts among various courthouse officials due primarily to increasing wrangling over transportation resources among various rural jurisdictions including those within hardin county itself although most residents supported remaining unified just like they had done numerous times before without ever achieving anything more than verbal agreement beyond that However even Boyd County buildings were not spared vandalism or fire damage resulting largely from drunken drivers Hellfire Grill owners Lou Tolmon(who died suddenly aged only 53 shortly before his restaurant burned downDecember 16th 1984), Ray Kitterman(52 years old at the time), Donny Hickman(53 years old when it happened) & their employee Tim Whitehead all responsible for starting this inferno which scorched across 3 storeys & caused extensive damage estimated at $100K+ but no arrests made despite public outcry throughout much of neighboring countiesseveral thousand dollars being offered up by local businesses& citizens once reconstruction began several decades later It wasn’t until 1959 when postmaster general Lucius Clay Maury took office under then president Harry Truman that things started to change with improvement seen first noticeable during 1961 when mail service improved greatly Thanks largely to maury’s directive letter carriers now wore uniforms rather than simple black overalls making them easier identifiable both inside & outside the buildingwhich helped reduce crime rates considerably although many people seem still unable or unwillingto take responsibilityfor their actions especially since lawsuits continue to follow regardless Additionally television personalities such as Ernie Kovacsek covered local news stories right up until his untimely death suddenly plunging the entire community into darkness November 25th 1984 just shy of 50 years old leaving behind five beautiful daughters along side an amazing list of grandchildren including current mayor Randy Boren tentatively scheduled to receive honorary citizenship next year should he be successful ); today we enjoy excellent freeway access roadway running adjacent our town proper providing easy access either directiona majorplus considering our location
Henderson was founded in 1783 by planter and Revolutionary War veteran James Henderson. The town grew rapidly due to the natural resources it had access to, including coal and lead. By 1800, Henderson boasted a population of over 1,000 people. In 1801, the town was renamed Henderson after General David Henderson, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as Kentucky's first governor. During the late 19th century, Henderson experienced an economic boom due to its location on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad and its growing trade with surrounding counties. However, by World War I, Henderson hadshrank to a population of 100 people due to depopulation from other parts of Kentucky.
