Henderson, Kentucky is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 7,759 at the 2010 census. Henderson is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Henderson is one of the few towns in Pike County that does not have a post office. The only way to receive mail there is by sending it through the Henderson-Hopkinsville ZIP Code (77331). Henderson was founded by five men who came from Tennessee in 1847: James Hendersons, John McNaughtens, David Bowers, Daniel Clements and Peter Hickson. They built a cabin on the banks of Big Sandy Creek and named it Henderson after their old home state of Tennessee. In 1853 they moved to what is now east side of town and started farming. They built a log courthouse in 1865 and named it for General William Tipton Henderson who had fought in the American Civil War on the Confederate side. The community developed because farmers could get along with each other well because there was no railroads then and transportation was via boat or horseback ride. In 1955 Henderson incorporated as a village and became an unincorporated community again when West Virginia annexed Pike County into that state. In 1961 it became part of Lyndon Johnson's presidential campaign county headquarters area during his run for president as he campaigned in nearby Hazard County; much later that year he announced his candidacy from Henderson while on tour in central Kentucky.]]

A small metal plate with a image of a human or animal on it was etched into the surface of a rock and then shot at with an artillery piece. The rocks would ricochet off and create a realistic target that could be fired at from long distances. Gunnery became more refined over time, and eventually large metal plates with images of different animals or people were machined out of metal and shot off at high speeds using cannons. Today, Henderson is one of the most vibrant cities in Kentucky and is home to many popular tourist attractions such as the First National Bank Arts District and also numerous professional institutions including Vanderbilt University and Belknap College of Business.
Henderson was founded in 1792 by Captain John Henderson and his wife, Deborah. Captain Henderson was the first white person to set foot in what is now Henderson County. The town was originally called "Newcastle," but it changed its name to Henderson in honor of its founder. The community had a smallpox epidemic in 1811, which led to the founding of the Ladies' Aid Society to help fight the disease. In 1865, Henderson became an incorporated city and soon afterward experienced heavy growth due to its location on the Kentucky-Tennessee state line. By 1910, Henderson had a population of over 10,000 people. In 1922, Henderson merged with neighboring Louisville and became one city again.
