Henderson, Kentucky is a small town in the U.S. state of Kentucky, located about 20 miles east of Louisville. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. Henderson is part of the Louisville-Jefferson County metropolitan area. Local history begins with settlers coming to Henderson in 1821 from Lexington, Kentucky and other surrounding counties. The town was organized on February 16, 1825 by a group of men led by Samuel Fenton and James Robertson. A post office was established in Henderson on March 8, 1825, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1906. Henderson became an incorporated village on January 1, 1926; it absorbed the unincorporated communities of Highland Park and Queenstown that same year. On July 15, 1960, the village changed its name to Henderson when it joined defendant city of Louisville as one unit within Jefferson County . The first school in Henderson was built on Church Street near present day Buchanan Elementary School around 1826-27 under teacher Reverend David Laddsbaugh (1792-1850). In 1830 local resident John McKinney donated land for a new school which would include three buildings: a boys’ room/laboratory on one side of the building facing Main Street (now Buchanan Elementary School), a girls’ room/classroom on the other side facing Market Street (now Liberty Avenue), and an auditorium/playground across Market Street from what is now Roosevelt Middle School . It opened September 3rd 1830 with 12 students . In 1833 additional classrooms were added to this building including classrooms for six sisters who had come from nearby Georgetown Female Academy . This new building served as both schools until 1860 when another school block replaced all 4 buildings – still serving as today’s Buchanan Elementary School main campus with 2 more wings providing classroom space for up to 150 students each wing! The original white brick structure remains standing today as does most if not all original features such as bell tower & cupola although some windows have been replaced since construction date
