Henderson, Kentucky is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Henderson is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. Henderson was founded by Captain John Covington in 1784 as a trading post on theico-creek of Henderson Fork. It became an agricultural community and then a thriving industrial center due to its location along the Cumberland River and its production of coal, cotton ginnery capacity, lime kilns and other products from the Limestone Hills. The town's name derived from George Henderson who donated land for it in 1812. Hendersonville was established nearby in 1865 as a principal city of Johnson County with more than 5,000 residents before it declined during World War II because of lack of military supplies needed for soldiers camped there. The decline continued after the war; by 1970 only 1,072 people remained in Hendersonville while 2,707 lived in other parts of Johnson County. Today however local businesses continue to thrive thanks totheir proximity to government facilities such as Randalls Department Store and Grannis Memorial Hospital which are located just outside town limits. Tourism has also been buoyant with several visitors attractions such as the American Civil War Museum open since 2006 inside the former brick courthouse complex on Main Street near downtown Hendersonville. The first post office opened on February 14th 1811 under the name "Newcastle." On July 3rd 1851 it changed its name to "Henderson" after General George Hatton who had served with distinction under Ulysses S Grant at Bull Run and Shenandoah Valley campaigns during the Mexican–American War. In 1906 Jones & Laughlin merged their two factories into one company becoming America's largest steel producer until that time; they left Henderson in 1984 after seventy years continuous operation making them one of America's last old-line steel companies still extant today (a process that began when they bought out their competitors' shares).
