The first post office opened in 1802, but it was moved to what is now downtown Henderson twice before settling permanently at Main and Third Streets in 1806. In 1840, when Williamson County was created from part of Hardeman County, Henderson became part of that county too, until Williamson abolished it in 1868 effective as all other counties within Kentucky did then. The last post office closed sale on October 14th 1975 after more than 100 years serving the community - another impressive feat for such a small town! Today only one building remains standing from when Henderson had four: an old frame garage sits vacant to this day near First Avenue and Broadway Boulevard across from Walmart store). Henderson, Kentucky is a town in Jackson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,966 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Henderson was founded by settlers in 1814 and named for Henderson County, Tennessee. The first post office in Henderson was established on December 4, 1815. The name change to Hendersonville on November 14, 1826 after the arrival of John C. Henderson from Tennessee with his family to start a new life in what would become Jackson County. There were no banks or other commercial businesses until the mid-19th century when a mill was built near present day downtown Henderson and began producing flour and other goods for local residents and merchants throughout eastern Kentucky and southern Indiana. In 1870s real estate developments sprang up around downtown including Vine Street Circus District that became known as "the cultural center of Jackson County". In 1916 General George Washington Custer's body was brought back from Dakota Territory where he had been buried during the American Civil War and eventually interred at Mount Rushmore National Monument in South Dakota before being returned to Henderson on October 6, 1921 following an effort by local citizens spearheaded by Mayor Wm Ewing Gault who also served as president of theKentucky State Historical Society at that time Henderson remained an agricultural center until World War II when industry revived with substantial plant expansions across east central KY intoheny county due to strategic location within easy commuting distance of major cities like Louisville (25 miles)and Frankfort (40 miles). During war years cotton production boomed while rural populations supported military personnel and their families with food crops such as cornbread production which increased significantly during peacetime thanks to government subsidies intended primarily for agriculture but also enjoyed largely bipartisan support given political realities which included large federal deficits resulting from wartime mobilization spending
