Henderson, Kentucky is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 539 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first people to live in Henderson were the Watters family who settled there in 1814. The present-day Henderson post office was founded in 1821. Henderson was named for General Daniel Henderson, a hero of the Mexican–American War and an early settler on the east side of what is now Henderson County. Daniel's son Josiah built the first store in what is today Henderson during the 1800s. In 1815, John Stephenson moved from Ohio and opened a store on Main Street which became known as "The Stephenson Store." He sold goods including cookware, flour and other agricultural products until his death in 1865. By 1830, many farmers had arrived in eastern Hardin County and began selling groceries and hardware to farmers living near them at stores like "The general store" on Third Street near present day Central High School; also called "the Stephenson House". In 1830, one of Colonel James Dixon's Confederate soldiers found land about three miles east of present day Henderson and laid out a township called Dixonville around this new settlement; it included parts of what are today Pope Township (northwest corner) and Hardin Township (southwest corner). When Union forces came across thiscosolid village late one Sunday evening during their March 1861 Invasion of southeastern Kentucky they burned most everything inside both villages – even houses – before marching back into southern Illinois that same morning without taking any prisoners or laying waste to these settlements which numbered perhaps 100-300 people! This event forever changed not only Hardin County but also adjacentPope Township where much valuable real estate still remains today! Today there are no buildings remaining from either village except for some pews from one church standing between Dixonville and Pope Township currently used as parking lot for local businesses located thereabouts; along with a few pioneer era farm tools still scattered around central HardinCounty providing Historical evidence that once these two villages thrived…. however events intervened that destroyed both by 38 years! Henderson experiences significant growth following World War II as many men returned home due to concern over war economy after Victory In Europe brought so much destruction abroad while looking towards better times domestically Although limited housing options developed locally during hard times Many Memorable Restaurants sprang up such as Suckers restaurant now open at 4555 US Highway 421 Findlay Rd., Known for its hot dogs & various sandwiches

Henderson was platted on November 3, 1821, by order of President James K. Polk as part of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The first settler in Henderson was David Crouch, who arrived in 1826. A post office called Henderson was established in 1828, and remained open until 1907. The community grew rapidly due to its location along the Cumberland River and its access to transportation including a passenger ferry crossing the river to Louisville. In 1840, Henderson became one of three towns within TVA's new region known as "the Middle Border". This area included parts of what are now Parkersburg and West Virginia; it had been intended as an agricultural center for TVA's new areas west of Pittsburgh and east of Cincinnati. By 1850, however, Henderson had become a vibrant city with over 2,000 residents and a thriving commercial sector that included cotton mills and tobacco warehouses. In 1861 h

Henderson grew rapidly after white settlers began to arrive in droves from Kentucky and Tennessee. By 1820, Henderson had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1825, the first post office was established in Henderson. The town prospered until the late 19th century when it began to decline due to heavy economic competition from larger towns around the area. By 1920, Henderson had only a handful of residents remaining and its economy had collapsed. Today, Henderson is a ghost town located within easy driving distance of Louisville and Nashville.
