Henderson, Kentucky is a town in Trimble County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,653 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Trimble County. Henderson has been home to some of the first permanent European settlers in what would become Kentucky. Henderson was founded by James Henderson in 1799 as a store stop on the Cumberland River. Henderson's early growth came from its location near trade routes and transportation hubs such as Louisville and Frankfort. By 1815, Henderson had become an important agricultural center due to its access to water resources and its location on the Ohio River between Louisville and Lexington. In 1825, Henderson became one of the first places in Kentucky to be granted land for white settlement when Governor Isaac Shelby certifed that land grants were being made "to promote Virtue and Property." The post office at Henderson was established in 1824, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The first school opened in 1861; it became an Academy of Learning in 1904. The present day courthouse was built around 1870 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. In addition to its primary economic functions as a small town with close-knit community relationships, Henderson also provides opportunities for education through nearby colleges and universities: Western Kentucky University (WKU), Northern Illinois University Carbondale (NIU-C), Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), Transylvania University USA (TUA), Morehead State UNIVERSITY (MOO) – all located within easy walking distance of downtown or central square city activities throughout each campus’ calendar year! Additionally there are several hundred acres along riverfront property used for various outdoor recreational pursuits including fishing, hiking/bike riding/sport hunting etc., making this area attractions not only for locals but visitors as well!
