In the early 1800s, Glasgow, Kentucky was a small town of 5,000 people. The community was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants and their families in the late 18th century. By 1860, Glasgow had over 25 businesses and 500 residents. In that year, the first gun show was held in Glasgow and handguns were exhibited for the first time. At this show, gun manufacturers from all across America came to sell their products. One of the exhibitors was Samuel Colt who displayed his new revolver called the Gray Eagle. This weapon quickly became popular among handgun owners in Glasgow and throughout Kentucky. The popularity of handguns led to an increase in demand for rifles and shotguns. As rifle prices increased, so too did those for pistols. In 2006 local councillor Murdo MacLeod resigned after revelations he used his position as mayoralty candidate not just once but twice against his own party membership figures![1] After much public outcry he finally retracted these admissions later that year[2]. Despite this controversy Glencairn continued having more councillors than either city or small town combined until 2011 when its voting power was reduced following amalgamation with neighbouring Marshalltown . Although still listed as a separate ward on the local council website[3], Glencairn’s municipal status will be replaced by that of Marshalltown once new wards are created for both cities .
