Glasgow, Kentucky is a small town located in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,491 at the 2000 census. Glasgow is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The name "Glasgow" comes from the Gaelic language and it means 'fortress'. The first settlers in what is now Glasgow were farmers who came overland from Ireland. They built their homes around a fort they called Glasgow Faughnan or Fort Garry. The fort was probably destroyed by the Indians in 1763 but some evidence suggests that it may have been rebuilt. The post office at Glasgow was established on December 2, 1820, and served until May 9, 1829. It was moved to its present location about two miles west of downtown on Main Street in 1859. At that time, Scotland Yard (later renamed as US Marshals Headquarters) was located just across Main from the post office; it became an annex to the post office when Glasgow annexed Marshall County in 1800. The Glasgow, Kentucky area was first settled by the Shawnees in the early 1800s. The area was then sold to the Potters in 1827. The Potters were followed by the Hammonds in 1837, and finally the Lincolns in 1845. The Glasgow community was founded on a small farm known as "Albatross" near downtown. The original store and school were built there. After several years of growth, the town acquired its own post office in 1851. In 1861, Glasgow became one of seven townships within Jefferson County. In 1870, Glasgow annexed part of neighboring Morehead City and began to grow rapidly as a commercial center. By 1880, it had become one of the largest cities in Kentucky with a population of over 100 people. By 1900, Glasgow had reached its peak as an agricultural center with a population of over 1,000 people. However, during World War I (1914-18), Glasgow lost much of its economic significance due to military service and bombing raids by Germany.
