Glasgow, Kentucky is a city in and the county seat of Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 892 at the 2010 census. Glasgow is located on the Ohio River near its confluence with the Cumberland River. It is named for Glasgow, Scotland. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Marshall County was made by Scottish pioneers in 1814 when they founded a trading post on the present-day site of Glasgow. At that time it was part of Transylvania (now Ukraine). The town rapidly grew into an important transportation center due to its position along both river corridors and its location within easy reach of major markets in Ohio and Virginia. In 1827, Scotsman James Fenton established Fort Fenton upstream from Glasgow on the Cumberland River to protect traders and travelers travelling between Cincinnati and Louisville while they built up their trade connections inland. In 1845, as part of an effort to build up resources for his forthcoming gubernatorial campaign, John Covington donated land to Marshall County free of charge in order to create a fine agricultural community known as "Covington's Pasture". The development continued apace through 19th century until railroads arrived in central KY during the late 19th century which led to significant changes in economic activity and population patterns throughout McConnell County During World War II, Glasgow served as one of two U.S.-occupied airfields used by RAF Bomber Command; other airfields were more distant such as Prestwick Airport in Scotland .
