The Buchanan Barracks were built in 1919 to house World War I troops stationed here during their stay before being decommissioned in 1922 due to budgetary restrictions caused by World War I troop withdrawals from Europe while also reducing Army strength across all U S territories east of Mexico City . They have been used periodically as housing for soldiers until they were sold to Greenwood Community College District for use as an arts center . On July 13th 2008 local school board member Donnie Shephard announced that plans are underway to turn them into an all-purpose multipurpose facility capable of hosting concerts,, fireworks shows,,bulldog matches,, soccer games,, wrestling contests etc... Plans call for demolition of part of the barracks walls so that a new music education/performance hall can be built adjacent with classrooms/ rehearsal studios/event space for up to 400 students or more! A $10 million dollar appropriation from state government will go towards completing this project which should be finished by fall 2009
