Glasgow, Kentucky is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1829 by Scots-Irish settlers from Glasgow, Scotland. The name of the town comes from the Gaelic word "glas" meaning "glass." Glasgow is located on the Cumberland River and has a total area of 5 square miles (14 km²). The early Scots-Irish settlers who founded Glasgow were farmers and their families. They had to be very careful not to provoke Native Americans because they were known for being raiders and warriors. In 1829, when Captain Hennepin discovered that some Indians had been raiding his farmer's crops near Glasgow, he organized a force of Scots-Irish men and women to drive the Indians off our farms. This event is widely remembered in Glaswegian history as the Battle of Glasgwadie. In 1830, Captain Hennepin organized another group of Scottish-Irishmen to form a village called Kilcoyne on the east side of the Cumberland River opposite present day Glasgow. This village lasted until 1840 when it was abandoned due to Indian raids. The first post office in Glasgow opened in 1834. It was moved from its original location across the river to what is now downtown in 1836 after an Indian raid destroyed much of what had been built there including several churches and school buildings. In 1861, local landowners formed a company called The Western Railroad Company and started construction on a railroad through Glasgow which would eventually connect with Louisville and Nashville northward. This project finally ended in 1865 when Confederate forces destroyed part of the railroad line while driving Union troops out of southeast Kentucky during the American Civil War
