Glasgow, Kentucky is a town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. Glasgow is the county seat of Johnson County. The first settlement in what is now Glasgow happened around 1812 when two families from Michigan moved to what is now Johnson County and named their new land " Glasgow". In 1827, James Carden decided to set up a store in the area and named it after his home city of Glasgow, Scotland. The store continued trading until it burned down in 1865. From 1865-1868, the post office was located in downtown Glasgow and served as the county seat forJohnson County. In 1881, a group of Scotsmen from Glasgow settled near present day downtown Glendale and began building a cotton gin and other businesses there. This group became known as the Glaswegian Cotton Ginners and continue to operate today as Glaswegian Cotton Ginnery Incorporated (G3C). In 1905, they donated land east ofglasgow for an outdoor education center that continues to be used by rural students today. In 1907-1908, two years after prohibition began in America, local businessmen founded the first distillery west of Louisville – The Glenlivet Distillery Company Ltd., which still operates today as one of America's leading distilled spirits companies. The company's first product was whisky but soonproduced vodka also! In 1914-1915 another business venture took place when three men fromGlasgow established Wacoal Rubber & Tire Corporation Ltd., later renamed Texaco Natural Gas Corporation Limited before being spun off into its own company called Mobil Oil Corporation Limited in 1984; this business has since been sold completely to ConocoPhillips .
