Georgetown is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,959 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. Georgetown was founded in 1814 by Col. James Wilkinson and his family as a trading post on KY-1 (now KY-169). The town grew rapidly during early 1800s when settlers began moving into this area from all over Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1824, Georgetown became the county seat of Pike County and developed as a commercial center with several brickyards, woolen mills, and a sawmill. A school was built in 1828 and continued to be used until 1951; it now houses the Georgetown Museum of History & Industry. In 1830, John Sisson purchased 2 acres (0.8 km²) of land adjoining present day Georgetown east of the river for $225 dollars cash only. He named his new settlement "Sisson's Ferry" after himself and donated the land to the government for use as an agricultural station on the then newly formed Cumberland Road system connecting Lexington with Nashville via KY-2 (now US-64). By 1840, there were about 60 people living in Sisson's Ferry including 14 farmers who raised corn, beans, potatoes etc.; no industry existed until 1861 when two large brickyards were started: one operated by Wm Houlahan and Sons – still going today –and another run by Ewing & Sanford which became known as The Brickyard Place later that year. The first store opened in1861; soon afterwards another brickyard was started by Jno Laughlin which continues to operate today under different names such as Laughlin’s or Clark’s Brickyard Company Incorporated (LBCO). The first post office opened in Georgetown on November 12th 1865; it served residents of Sisson's Ferry until January 3rd 1870 when it moved to its present site across Main Street from the old courthouse where it remains today serving residents of Georgetown through USPS mail service ever since! During World War II many patriotic citizens worked at local munitions factories supplying troops fighting overseas while others searched for ways to avoid drafted into military service during one of history's most repressive periods - McCarthyism! Many businesses closed during this time but some such as Laughlin’s continued operations thanks to their customers/workers who had faith that things would get better someday! After WWIIended many people left town for various reasons including hippies who frequented nearby Keenan Park which has since been renamed Simons Hill although much crime still occurs within town limits despite efforts made by law enforcement!

After the Battle of Lexington and subsequent campaign against Confederate cavalry units within Lexington proper, Georgetown quickly surrendered its defenders to Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army and joined Grant's column as it moved through eastern Kentucky to battle Richmond entrenched at Petersburg Peninsula. reported that "the capital of these parts" had been taken from "a Rebel State". The town has experienced many changes throughout its history; some were due to natural disasters such as flash flooding which destroyed most buildings during the 2002 Flooding event that occurred during the summertime floods across much of central and eastern Kentucky; others were caused by various political events or movements that impacted its residents or businesses: In 1862 however, when Confederate forces invaded Kentucky they burned all but one church in Georgetown including their own Bishop’s Palace (now known as Old Main), destroyed many homes and business blocks with burning fires leaving a devastated landscape This was followed by other operations such as Raid #1 which took place on November 15th 1865 resulting in over 100 homes being looted inside what is now known as Parkview Elementary School before finally surrendering two days later On March 4th1876 three men armed with pistols walked into town square shots having just killed four farmers while they slept outside their home only to be apprehended afterwords One day prior another man shot dead **two** people **outside** courthouse steps five miles east of town* causing widespread panic among citizens who thought this meant war
