Georgetown, Kentucky is a town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1827 by James Robertson and others as a trading post on the present-daysite of Georgetown. The town later became a coal mining center with heavy industry until it closed its doors in the 1970s. Today, Georgetown is largely a rural community with few amenities outside of the small shopping district near its courthouse and library. However, some residents continue to commute to larger cities for work or pleasure. The first settlers in Georgetown were Presbyterian missionaries who arrived in 1827. By 1830, they had erected an log church and began to welcome Scots-Irish immigrants from Ireland who had come to pioneer this new land that would eventually become Kentucky. By 1840, there were over 100 people living in Georgetown when the first school opened its doors for students of all ages. The first post office was established on May 9th of that year and served as the main artery for trade between Georgetown and other surrounding towns. The growth of Georgetown during these early years was due primarily to two factors: Leadville Coal Company (now ArcelorMittal) located near Leadville and its employees which helped spur development; and easy access to transportation through nearby Pike County which led to more businesses opening up throughout Georgetown's history including carpenters, shoemakers, tailors etc., while also providing jobs for many locals during hard times such as during World War II when many local miners worked at mines around Pike County production centers like Donelson Mines & Mill #5). However despite all these positives, things started to go wrong starting back in the mid 1800s as lead mine accidents increased along with lung problems caused by breathing dust created by continuous mining operations (leading to respiratory diseases such as pneumoconiosis which are still being faced today). In 1892 however when American Bridge Co built what is now known as Wealthy Street across from downtown Georgetown - one of their largest projects ever - it finally put an end to most south Kentuckians' reliance on lead mined products from their homes (and ultimately ended any hope that Lexington would become our city after all). Nonetheless though not without struggle overahange local communities gradually managed themselves through business expansionism spearheaded by local entrepreneurs or "oarders" (a term often used today for developers interested only in extracting value from foreclosed properties) until quite suddenly everything came undone once again – this time intentionally – following another natural disaster struck southernmost KY causing widespread devastation leaving entire villages lossin both human life AND property; devastating events dubbed 'the Great Locust Swarm' that wreaked havoc across much of central Appalachia affecting even smaller settlements like those surrounding us; making local governments essentially nothing more than figureheads rather then vehicles serving important social functions within their respective communities; home rule movements gaining traction statewide but quickly failing against entrenched interests ); leading directly into prohibition era Louisville & Nashville economies which characterized much of southern Appalachia much differently than we do today…. altogether resulting what we euphemistically call 'the Famine'.
