While losing heavily (the Confederates lost more than 50% of their force), General Ewell ordered his troops to dump their rifles into some cornfields adjacent to Belknap Place where they remained until relieved by Federal forces less than two weeks later! As a result of this engagement and other events leading up to it such as violence at local elections that year which saw party members fighting among themselves over control of key committees within city limits (a precursor to today's mayoral races), many citizens turned against secessionist ideals following this conflict which led directly into World War I! While many businesses closed down during World War I due solely to lack of customers or munitions necessary for war efforts (euphemistically called "the Great Depression"), one such business that flourished was Mr. Kappeler’s Store which continued operations despite beingclosure notices mailed throughout much of 1919 due primarily to shortages caused by military production quotas set by Congress occupying southern Kentucky at that time!
