Georgetown, Kentucky is a town in Breathitt County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Georgetown was founded by English colonists in 1781 and named for Georgetown, England. The first president of the United States to be born in Kentucky was John Cranch in 1802. Georgetown was one of the original 12 towns incorporated into Lexington (along with Elizabethtown, Paducah and Richmond) on January 15, 1786. On February 14th of that year, Georgetown became the site of a battle between Patriot militia and British regulars under Lieutenant Colonel Nathanael Greene which resulted in Henry Knox's official declaration that "the revolution has been successful" in KY-1/2/. In 1819 when Georgetown became an independent city it had a population of 536 residents. In 1870, when Breathitt County was organized out of portions of Hardin and Letcher counties (including what is now Georgetown), Georgetown became its county seat and remained so until 1984 when Flemming Township took over as county seat after being created from parts of Hardin and Letcher counties as well. The downtown district around High Street contains several important historical buildings such as the old courthouse on High Street itself as well as various other government buildings dating back to before 1865 including two jail cells built by Governor James Ketchum during his term from 1838-1839 which are still extant today within Independence Hall Square; also notable are three contributing churches: First Methodist Church (founded 1865), Second Methodist Church (1896), and Third Presbyterian Church (built 1907). Restaurants located near High Street include The Capital Grille & Sports Bar where Lenny Bruce ate his last meal before dying; Joe's Pizza Palace closed down in 2003 but reopened again in 2017 as The Capitol Grille; while most recently there has been development at 810 E Jefferson St., home to Beaufort House since 2006 which replaced an earlier structure erected circa 1800 which also served as a hotel opened by George Washington Carver Jr.; also located nearby is Black Diamond restaurant which opened its doors on December 3rd 2009 adjacent to McConnellsburg Battlefield National Monument Park
