It was once part of the Louisville metropolitan area and is now part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Georgetown was founded in 1826 by General John Nance Garner as Fort Nance on the present site of what is now Georgetown University. In 1830, Georgetown became an independent town when it seceded from Butler County and merged with Russell County. The first post office in Georgetown was established in 1829, and its first store opened in 1835. A depot was built on the Big Sandy River in 1836 to serve Georgetown's growing Railroad industry; it burned down in 1862. The first school for girls opened in 1888. In 1886, Washington Parish School District No. 2 organized a high school for students from Georgetown unincorporated areas that had been served by local schools until then. In 1916, Washington Parish closedEGTSD No 2 after only 5 years due to lack of enrollment but reopened two years later as Jefferson Davis High School which still serves students today (the original building burned down again in 1978). The current name given to Georgetown proper after its incorporation into Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area is "Georgetown University". The university has been located there since 1889 and began awarding degrees nationally that same year. There are currently over 40 undergraduate programs at GWU and professional programs throughout many fields including law, medicine, business administration/finance/accountancy etc., making it one of the most comprehensive higher education institutions within the Commonwealth of Kentucky and across America!
