Georgetown, Kentucky is a town in Harlan County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Georgetown is located on the eastern edge of Harlan County and is bordered by the towns of Winchester to the northeast and Radford to the south. It is also bordered byloe and Madison counties to the west and east. The first permanent European settlers in Georgetown were Englishmen who arrived from Norfolk in 1685. In 1786, French Canadians settled in what would become Georgetown; they were followed by Scots-Irish immigrants from Ulster about 1800. The first post office was established in Georgetown on July 1, 1812. The town became an incorporated municipality on May 14, 1868. In 1830, Indiana's rough terrain made it difficult for farmers to grow crops; thus, a group of land speculators organized into companies bought some of this land and started farmsteads thereabouts; these early farmers raised corn (maize) and other vegetables while working off their mortgages or loans against their holdings at home or elsewhere in Indiana. Eventually some 12 miles (19 km) worth of road had been built through central Harlan County between Lexington and Bloomington so that farmers could get their goods to market without having them trucked overland across Indian Territory then being part of Indiana; this development led directly to what is now Georgetown being founded as a town! One such early pioneer was John Healy who arrived with his family soon after General James Ketchum's retreat from Fort Donelson following his victory over Confederate General Robert Easley at Montgomery Station near present-day Hendersonville on November 15–16, 1862. John Healy built a cabin which remains standing today on Main Street near where he lived until his death just before February 28th 1875 age 83 years old according as recorded by history books still extant today! Healy left behind one daughter named Martha Jane who married Daniel Denny Poston son of Elijah Poston Sr., proprietor/manager/operator of First National Bank building located currently at 515 S Broadway Street corner Third Avenue NE&East Side Drive NW since its opening date November 7th 1901 thru December 31st 1957 when it closed due to fire!

In 1837, Georgetown joined with other easternKentucky communities to form what is now known as the Louisville & Nashville Railroad Company. This company grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, investing heavily in construction projects throughout eastern Kentucky. By 1860, Georgetown had become one of Louisville's most important industrial centers; its factories produced such items as flour, cloth, shoes, bacon (butter), coffee beans, tobacco products and ironclad warships*. During Reconstruction following America's Civil War*, Confederate General Robert Ewell* occupied Lexington on April 15*, 1865* while Union General Ulysses S. Grant* generalized his forces over much of central KY *. On November 5*, 1865*, after weeks of fighting culminating with Union victories at Pea Ridge *and Lookout Mountain*, Confederate General Jubal Early* withdrew from Lexington.* In 1870*, Georgetown acquired its current name: "Georgetown" honoring its history as an important center for trade and commerce prior to secession* (*Note: For more information about these events see below).
