Georgetown, Kentucky is a town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent inhabitants of Georgetown were three families who moved from Harper's Ferry in 1785. The town was founded in 1821 by General John Fenton and named for Georgetown University which had been opened two years earlier. The original courthouse and jail were built on what is now Elm Street. In 1826 the town voted to move from its original location east of the river to its current site on the south bank of the Harpers Ferry Branch of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad just north of downtown. In 1829 Georgetown married into one of America's most prominent families: Richard Henry Harrison’s wife Rachel was daughter of Nicholas II Romanoff, Tsarofiey (grandson of Emperor Catherine II). Rachel became Princess Russianna with her husband as her co-conspirator in setting up a trade route between Russia and China through Inner Mongolia that would open up new markets for American manufacturers. This venture failed but it served as an important stepping stone to Russian independence and helped make Washington D.C., their new home after they separated from Rachel’s father approximately one year later; this event also marked the beginning of a twenty-year rivalry between Washington D.C.–based Georgetown University (founded by John Fenton) and Moscow’s Leningrad State University which would culminate with Harrison’s 1924 purchase thereof for $1 million dollars—making him America’s first billionaire since Andrew Carnegie had become president four years earlier! In 1830–1831 Georgetown built a schoolhouse on what is now Elm Street on land donated by Colonel Hugh Waddellesworth—the only teacher then taught within Georgetown limits! Classes began in October 1830 under the leadership of Reverend Jnoachim Muddiman who organized local subscription drives to finance construction while continuing instruction outside normal school hours each day until December 31st 1830 when classes reopened inside Holy Cross Catholic Church under Rev Fr James Covington (a native son/nephew born to English parents living near Lexington). In March 1831 Reverend Covington resigned due to “illness without any cure existing [in] his body or mind” necessitating retirement from his position at fifty years old according to contemporary sources although he continued teaching during his final weeks alive at Holy Cross before passing away suddenly on April 5th 1831 at age seventy-six (!). A building permit for a “School House for Girls only” was issued January 3rd 1832 but never built because no girls ever attended! When General Joseph Hooker arrived in early winter 1865 he found much needed supplies including shoes, clothing, tools, ammunition and food running short within Johnson County due primarily to Confederate military strategy called “ Pickett's Charge ” intended to drive Union forces back across Tellico River so that Robert E Lee could invade Virginia From here onwards Union troops could operate more easily against enemy forces throughout eastern Kentucky including Jefferson Davis' army massing along Eastern Tennessee border
Georgetown was founded in 1788 by General James Monro. The town grew rapidly and by 1802, Georgetown had a population of over 5,000 people. In 1812, the town was renamed to Louisville after General John C. Floyd. The first courthouse in Louisville was built in 1814 and the city exploded with growth during the 19th century. The growth of Louisville led to the construction of many factories and businesses throughout the city including three brickyards that still stand today – John D’Arcy Brickyard, Donelson Brickyard, and Thomas Minton Brickyard. During this time, Georgetown also experienced rapid growth as it became an important center for transportation and commerce within Louisville. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Easley invaded Kentucky from Tennessee and began burning businesses and homes in Georgetown. This prompted Ulysses S. Grant to order Union troops into town to protect residents from further destruction. Aftermath of the war led to an increase in business activity for Georgetown as merchants turned their attention towards rebuilding post-war Kentucky than towards operating their businesses within Louisville again. The end of World War II brought about a significant change to Georgetown as most manufacturing jobs were relocated away from Kentucky due to scarce resources during wartime times. However, because of its location within downtown Louisville – which remain today one of the most active areas for retail shopping – Georgetown has continued to experience significant economic growth throughout the years since its heyday in the 1800s.
