The gunfire caused several windows in the house to shatter and alerted other residents, who came running outside to see what was going on. In 1870, Georgetown had three stores and six families living there. By 1910, the population had grown to 14 businesses with a total payroll of $1 million dollars. In 1912, President Woodrow Wilson visited Georgetown and gave a speech at McCourtney Hall on November 8th which helped begin the trend of social service programs at Georgetown University. The town experienced another boom during World War I when it became known as "the breadbasket of America." However, due to economic security problems during that time period and an increase in Prohibitionism in America, the town declined during this time period. Since 1978, local residents have been working together to revitalize downtown Georgetown with measures such as restoration of old buildings and new development including a new library/museum complex and new shops/restaurants along Sixth Street between Market Street and King Street NW which are anchored by an innovative shopping mall called Yards Park Place Mall which opened in 2016 adjacent to historic Gonzales House on Market Street NW .
