Georgetown is a small town in Kentucky, just across the state line from Kentucky's only other city, Lexington. The population was 2,959 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette-Danville metropolitan area. Georgetown is one of several towns in Fayette County that were founded as either plantations or military outposts during the early years of this century by men who desired to maintain control over strategic land located near major rivers and between two mountain ranges. The town began as a small frontier community on the banks of the Cumberland River. In 1821, George Washington Hardin purchased 1,000 acres (4 km2) of land in what is now Georgetown and built a log cabin there called "The White House." Hardin served as mayor of Georgetown from 1823 to 1830 and developed it into an agricultural center with mills, warehouses, and stores. He also built a chapel dedicated to St. John Baptist and named it "White Chapel." In 1825, James Kenedy bought 1,500 acres (6 km2) east of Georgetown for $5 per acre (0.24 hectares). He engaged in agriculture but abandoned it after few crops were grown because he could not afford transportation costs to market his produce. Kenedy became known as one of the most successful farmers in Kentucky due to his success at growing corn and peas on his vast tract. In 1840, Jeptha Bowen purchased 3 miles (5 km) south of Georgetown from Hardin for $10 per acre ($3/ha). Bowen was initially interested in developing what is now northeast corner of Georgetown into a large plantation but changed his mind when he realized that site would be too difficult to defend against Indian attack and decided instead to develop sectional interests within Fayette County politics instead. His descendants continue farming there today despite periodic threats from neighbouring states regarding their properties' ownership status since secession occurred in 1861. The first post office was established at Georgetown on November 11, 1850; it was called "Newburgh". A store opened there on December 12th which became the first store west of Louisville proper - this store still stands today and offers local produce items such as flowers & vegetables

Williamson County was created from part of Fayette County in 1802 and Georgetown became its county seat. During the War for Independence, many young men from Kentucky enlisted in the army and served in various units including Butler's Rangers and McClellan's Division. Many of these soldiers later settled in Georgetown, becoming some of its earliest citizens. In 1821, Georgetown joined forces with Louisville to form what is now known as theKY Union League. This group helped campaign against Andrew Jackson's presidential candidacy during the 1830s and 1840s. In 1865, when Louisville lost control of its government to fusionist efforts led by Governor Claiborne Lenoir, Georgetown sided with Lexington over Lenoir’s objections. After Lenoir’s death, Georgetown continued to support Lexington until their secession from Kentucky in 1870. During Reconstruction followingthe Civil War, many black Americans relocated to Georgetown because white business owners refused to hire them or provide them with necessary services such as education or work opportunities. This period is often referred to as “The Ghetto Years” because many black people were living within walking distance of downtown while they lack access todayto similar amenities or safe areas outside their neighborhoods
Georgetown was founded in 1786 by Major General Edmund Randolph. The town became a United States federal district in 1801 and has been ruled by the Republican Party since then.
