During World War II, many men from nearby Bardstown enlisted in military service and many homes were destroyed or damaged by artillery fire while they were fighting overseas; however some homes survived and later became part of downtown Georgetown after being rebuilt following the war. After World War II ended, downtown Georgetown slowly regained its former popularity as a business district due to its proximity to Interstate 65 and easy access to marketshare throughout eastern Kentucky due to its location within walking distance of several large shopping malls including Cincinnati Kroger Center and Manchester Mall (now Fifth Third Arena). During this time period, development occurred primarily along I-65 with some buildings constructed near historic sites such as Spring Hill Cemetery which has been preserved as a national historical landmark since 1978 and includes original gravesites dating back hundreds of years! Additionally new subdivisions have developed around I-65 providing plenty of potential housing options without having too much impact on downtown’s commercial districtscape! Today, downtown remains an important hub for commerce with numerous restaurants/bars/stores lining both Broad Street (the main thoroughfare) and Jefferson Avenue (one block south along I-65). Additionally there are several large office complexes located within walking distance including GEICO Fieldhouse on Broad Street just outside Downtown limits while FedExField – adjacent across I-64 – offers ample parking opportunities should events warrant it! While still experiencing some slowdown during recent years (#2 largest metropolitan area among KY towns), overall progress has been steady over recent decades making it an attractive place both economically & culturally!
