The Lexington-Fayette metropolitan area includes Georgetown and has a population of over 11 million people. Georgetown is one of the oldest settlements in Kentucky and was first settled by English colonists in 1778. There are several old buildings still standing in Georgetown that date back to this time including the log courthouse which was built in 1809 and still stands today. The town was originally named "Natchez", but after Indians killed many white settlers there, General Washington ordered the name changed to Georgetown to avoid any possible confrontation with them. In 1825, a school for poor children was founded within the limits of Georgetown by Reverend John Denton and it continued to be run until 1921 when it became part of Louisville State Teachers College. In 1865, Georgetown had its own post office and becoming an incorporated municipality began on October 25th that year under an act passed by the General Assembly entitled "An Act To Provide For Incorporating The Town Of Georgetown And Its Districts." On February 15th 1870, through incorporation as an unincorporated community located near what is now downtown Lexington, Georgetown lost much of its rural character while still remaining part of Pike County; however some new development did take place such as a hotel which opened in 1907 called Belknap House Inn & Conference Center which remains open today as well as churches (including St Andrews Episcopal Cathedral) schools (including Central High School), stores (The Gilded Cage grocery store), doctor's offices (Dr Jenson's Office), automobile dealership (Barratt Motors) and numerous other businesses that remain active today within the boundaries of current day Georgetown proper along with parts or all former shopping districts located outside present day boundaries including Butte Bottom Shopping Center east side ZIP code 62224
