The first settler to arrive in what would become Georgetown was John Armstrong who arrived with his family on July 3, 1811. The original town plat for Georgetown were prepared by James Stroud and are still preserved today at the Kentucky Historical Society Museum in Lexington, Kentucky. In 1828, Indian Chief Wyandotte attacked a party of white men traveling through Hardin County on their way to Fort Donelson near present day Bowling Green, Kentucky while they were camped along the Cumberland River. Five white men including Captains John Forbes and David Davies were killed as well as four Native Americans including Wyandotte's father-in-law Big Foote. This attack has been called one of the most important events leading up to American independence and led to increased military activity throughout what is now Hardin County. In retaliation for this tragedy, Congress passed an act giving President Andrew Jackson power to purchase land from tribes such as the Cherokee Nation for allotment to free black Americans. This action also opened up many new opportunities for settlement throughout central Kentucky which included Georgetown which became known as "America's Black Frontier." In 1830s there were over 20 brick buildings erected in Georgetown alone with shops and a Post Office serving both local residents and travelers alike until finally closing its doors for good around 1870 when railroads came through town making it difficult to keep up with traffic especially during off season when riverboats took passengers downstream instead of coming ashore themselves like earlier generations had done. However even though transportation difficult traffic never stopped flowing into and through town until after WWI when Interstate 70 arrived driving all but one business out of business overnight due to competition from automobiles gridlock caused by newly constructed expressways etc.. Today much remains unchanged about downtown Georgetown despite what has happened since then mainly because people have always been willing take risks if it means something new or different might happen; something that has yet again be born within this small townspeople community allowing them continue pushing forward no matter how tough times may seem
