In 1802, General James Wilkinson built Fort Donelson on an bluff overlooking the river near present-day downtown Frankfort. This fort served as an early warning system for regional raids by Native Americans and also helped protect American settlers from British attacks during the Northwest Indian Wars. In 1814, after temporary peace had been restored following Napoleonic invasions of Europe, General Andrew Jackson occupied Fort Donelson and began construction on what would become Jackson’s White House complex. Named for President James K. Polk (1812-1847), who had supervised its construction while serving as commissioner of Indian Affairs under President Polk, it was completed in 1826 and became America’s first presidential palace. During World War I (1914-1918), much activity took place in downtown Frankfort within easy reach ofFort Donelson: munitions plants were constructed here; shipyards produced tanks, planes and other military equipment; stores developed stockpiles for food supplies during wartime; medical services were provided; schools were held; government offices were located here too—all within walking distance from each other! The war did not cause any significant destruction or loss of life in downtown Frankfort—far from it! However, many businesses closed down because they could not compete with prices set by war-time rationing regulations that kept prices high while demand plummeted postwar due to economic downturns throughout most of America. Many people lost their jobs during those difficult years both inside and outside downtownFrankfort itself! In 1921–22 Mayor John Pendergast ordered demolition of all but three blocks eastward along High Street —a move which caused great outcry among citizens concerned about how such a drastic action would be executed without any public hearings or review process? Shortly thereafter he replaced Pendergast with George Wickersham as mayor (and later governor) due to wide acclaim from city residents for his leadership during these tough times! Wickersham quickly rebuilt most affected areas including demolishing most Chancelleries/Council Chambers/etc.; erecting new buildings on Constitution Avenue between High & Market Streets; adding sidewalks on several important streets including State Street (& elsewhere); initiating planning studies for future growth which culminated with passage by City Council authorizing annexation by Louisville into Frankfort County effective January 1st 1923!? By then almost half a century had passed since DowntownFrankfurt was last inhabited!!!
