In 1861–1863 both Confederate general Robert Ewell Buxton (1813-1875) and Union general Josiah Butler (1800-1875) Battle Midway near Frankfort while trying to strike at Boothbay Harbor on Lake Erie; both generals lost control over their units early in the engagement leading to significant losses for both sides. In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered his army into town after driving Confederate cavalry out from behind a Bald Mountain hill – this event helped solidify Grants reputation as an effective commander during the American Civil War era despite some negative press coverage following his earlier successes campaigns such as Sherman's March upon Savannah).
