Frankfort is a city in Kentucky, United States. The population was 10,724 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County and the home to the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team. The city began as a small community on the banks of the River Kenton. The first post office was established in 1827. Frankfort rapidly grew as a transportation center due to its location on both river and road routes. In 1840, the town became an official chartered city with full voting rights and independence from Jefferson County.
