In 1851, a group of Americans who had been living in Frankfort for several years came together to form the Second Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. This unit was formed to help protect the western frontier from Indian raiders and other threats. The regiment served in various campaigns during the 1850s and 1860s, including engagements at Winchester, Bull Run, and Perryville. In 1861, the unit was called into service as part of the Confederate army during the American Civil War. After the war ended, many of these veteran soldiers returned home to Frankfort and began rebuilding their lives. They helped createFrankfort's first city government in 1865 and helped make it one of Kentucky's largest cities. The city also played an important role in Republican Party politics throughout much of the 20th century.
Frankfort, Kentucky is a town in and the county seat of Frankfort County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 8,621 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jeffersonville metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Frankfort County was Nicholas Hunt in 1786. In 1811, James Caldwell settled in what is now Frankfort and made his home on a hill called Caldwell's Hill. He built a small log cabin which still stands today near the corner of Third and Market Streets. In 1816, John Fenton moved from Winchester to establish himself in what is now Frankfort and began trading with Smiths for goods brought overland from Tennessee by early settlers. He also constructed a sawmill on the River Roanoke near present-day downtown Frankfort. In 1825, General James Hays sold land to President Andrew Johnson for $4,000 for what would become known as McLean Park (later renamed Independence Mall). The mill site became home to some of the earliest brick buildings in town when Drury Brothers erected their brick factory there in 1830-31. The success of this enterprise led to other brick manufacturerablishments such as Pogue & Company (1835), Baird & Weeks (1836), and Rea Bros., Incorporated (1841). By 1840, much of downtownFrankfurt had been built up around these establishments but many residents still lived farmerially until after World War II when they joined urban developments such as Louisville Slugger Stadium and Convention Center adjacent to downtownFrankfurt. Many people who resided in downtown Frankfurt during this time found employment at nearby companies or government agencies including US Post Office (1914), First National Bank (1916), Kentucky Valley Authority Administration Building (1920s), State Highway Commission Building 1960s–1970s etcetera formed an interlocking community that continues into the 21st century called Downtown Frankfurt Historic District . This district encompasses numerous commercial buildings dating back to pre-war times with remnant residences located elsewhere within city limits
