Many high-profile successes have been achieved throughout recent years by leaders within both cities: notably Mayor Greg Fischer’s leadership in redeveloping downtown into an arts district which saw significant growth following a $10 million investment from private donors; former Mayor Jim Maloney’s aggressive marketing efforts which helped turn down several offers for property tax breaks from Louisville Slugger Baseball Stadium developers; and current Mayor Fischer’s successful bid for re-election this year after spending many years leading an insurgent campaign focused on improving infrastructure around town while also increasing taxes on businesses and individuals to bring about long term sustainable growth (including increased funding for education initiatives).

Frankfort is a city in and the county seat of Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 20,898 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Kentucky after Lexington and Frankfort proper has a total population of 31,569. The old downtown district which is now called "The Square" was founded by Colonel George Washington Hardin in 1792 as a military detachment on what is now Market Street. In 1814, Hardin County was established from parts of Price and Clark counties; Frankfort became its first town. In 1827, the first courthouse building was built on Broadway near where it stands today (now Liberty Avenue) and Frankfort became an incorporated city. In 1854–55, James K. Polk conducted his famous speech from the steps of one of the early courthouses on Broad Street just east of Main Street – that same location now occupied by One Fifth Street Baptist Church. During World War II many industries were located in or around Frankfort including munitions manufacturing, aircraft production, shipbuilding and other heavy industry exports to Allied countries during wartime shortages elsewhere in the world. After war ended many factories closed but some continued operations until they closed altogether such as Alcoa Aluminum Company which manufactured aluminum cans for Coca Cola products until their closure in 1984; Beechcraft Corporation's Auster Aircraft Division produced planes until their shutdown in 1987; US Steel Corporation's Bethlehem Steel Plant made steel products before their closure also in 1987; Bechtel Corporation's Fort Knox facility produced engineering services until their closures also in 1987 etc.; among others there were numerous other companies that operated within or outside Frankenton during this time period not all these have still been active since then although most have either re-opened or are currently inactive again such as Gibson Guitars which manufactured guitars until 1994 when they moved to China; Quaker Oats Foods' cereal manufacturing facility ceased production effective 2003 however oats continue to be grown here under different names such as 'Quaker Trails'. Today much economic activity takes place within Downtown Frankfort inside both historic buildings and new developments while suburbs nearby continue to grow mainly residential with no major industrial presence although there are occasional hearings held at City Hall about potential development proposals for areas adjacent to Downtown including tentatively called 'The Square' area bounded by High St., Elm St., Second St., Vine St., 10th Ave NE & Delaware Ave NE
Frankfort was founded in 1795 as the capital of Kentucky by James K. Polk. The city was originally named for French General and statesman François de la Fayette, who had visited the area in 1789. The original courthouse and government buildings were destroyed by fire in 1814, but a new building was erected shortly thereafter. In 1838, Frankfort became the seat of government for Kentucky when Louisville became the state capital. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, Frankfort retained its status as the capital until it was moved to Lexington in 1870.
