Polk, then president pro tempore of the United States Senate, traveled through Floyd County and noted that it contained "no town or village worthy mention" other than Caroline which he had never heard of before. He asked permission to rename the county after himself – this request was granted and Caroline became known as Knox County until becoming one again in 1907 when it merged with Floyd County into current day Kentucky. In 1861, Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell attacked Union troops at Perryville along the Ohio River; most notably, Colonel John Hunt Morgan led a charge that destroyed many buildings including an arsenal used by Union forces Pvt Augustus Kinsley (USMC) - helping save many lives that day at one point estimate 100 men were killed and over 200 wounded before being forced back by Union cavalry under MajGen Joseph Hooker leading 710 men against 3 brigades numbering more than 3000 rebels! 50+ years later another attack on Union troops took place near Lexington while they were returning late from dinner; this time around 5200 rounds were fired resulting in 150+ deaths along with over 400 injured! During World War II much activity occurred within town limits such as manufacturing munitions for our allies or warehousing supplies coming from Pennsylvania warehouses during hostilities; however due to Prohibition many areas experienced significant decline especially downtown where there has been very little renovation/redevelopment taking place for many years now! With so much history within city limits it’s no wonder why Franksfort has come to be considered “the historical engine” for all things related thereto throughout central Ky & US!
