This event helped start what would become known as the Downtown Battle Zone across much of downtown Frankfort where more than 100 people were killed or wounded during that day's fighting including many key figures in local government such as Mayor David Dixon and Lieutenant Governor Jeremiah Neely Jr.. On September 25th, 1971 – three days after martial law had been declared throughout most of northernKentucky following the Kent State shootings - many civilians gathered around City Hall Square to demand freedom from military occupation with stones thrown at militia units patrolling near by; these events are often called 'The siege of City Hall Square'. On October 3rd when martial law ended following Govt orders not to allow any further protests or looting/destruction without warrants it became largely abandoned for lack of other activities or residents who either chose not to return back into civil society or simply chose not to be associated with an occupying army that they saw as illegitimate given their right under KyVernacular law to do so... Later that year a group calling themselves 'The Citizens' Association' took up arms against militiamen stationed around town while also trying unsuccessfully (and unsuccessfully) to get attention from Gov't leaders about their concerns about growing militarization within their community - this eventually led to increased militiamen presence around town which spawned more violence between Militia andcivilians over time culminating with a helicopter raid conducted by state troopers on November 5th night resulting in several deaths amongst protestors which again reignited tensions between Militias and Civilians
