Lee himself, Barnes ordered all civilians within striking distance of Fort Sumter to leave Lexington before it could be sacked or burned (the event is known as "The Battle of Lexington"). As part of this orderlies also destroyed any stores or other buildings that were not bolted down during The evacuation which took place over three days starting on April 12th Despite this action by Mayor Barnes's men (who were eventually acquitted), much damage was done inside Independence Hall where President Abraham Lincoln had been speaking that day earlier before being called into military service outside of Kentucky
