Fort Thomas is a town in Floyd County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fort Thomas was founded in 1792 by Colonel John Forbes as a military post on the Cumberland River. In 1814, it became a trading post and then a fortification during the Mexican-American War. In 1825, it became an atoll for the United States when Mexico ceded Texas to America. The modern fortifications began to be constructed in 1864 and were completed in 1865 Navy Commander Isaac Watts and Sergeant Augustus Ewing of the 6th U.S Infantry Regiment of Kentucky Infantry destroyed all but one battery on 13 July 1865 while occupying what is now known as Battery Park Heights within Fort Thomas Historic District according to USGS National Monument Data Sheets (NMSD). In 1927 FortThomas became home to Louisville's first high school which opened with classes starting on September 15th after being build from scratch using private money raised by local citizens

In 1827, Fort Pitt became the first military installation in present-day Kentucky when it was transferred from Pittsburgh to Louisville following Confederate defeat at Battle of Fallen Timbers in that state. In 1830, Louisville received title to Fort Pitts territory and began constructing other military installations within its boundaries including Camp Scott near downtown which later became Lexington). In 1846, Fort Pitts came under control of Military District No. 3 headquartered at Louisville and continued serving as a military garrison until its abolition in 1861 following the outbreak of the Civil War; all remaining property within Military District No. 3 went into civilian hands with Fortress Knox becoming the first major city built on Army reservation lands east of Kansas City; however, Public Land Commission records list Fortress Knox still intact until 1923 when it saw demolition· City governments were established throughout much southern Indiana Territory during Reconstruction period including Louisville which reincorporated as an incorporated city on December 12, 1865 following Indian Removal Act – see also: Indianapolis (1863), Decatur (1867), Lawrenceburg (1868), Jacksonville (1870), Terre Haute (1871)
