From 1814 to 1818, Fort Thomas again served as a base of operations for US forces involved in various campaigns throughout Kentucky. The fort was abandoned in 1820 and subsequent years it lay deconstructed and neglected. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Fort Thomas became part of Confederate territory until Union troops captured it on January 15th, 1862. It remained under Union control until December 1865 when it reverted back to Confederate control. After the war ended,Fort Thomas gradually fell into disrepair and was eventually demolished in 1886.
