Fort Thomas, located in present-day Fort Thomas, Kentucky was founded in 1778 by General James Wilkinson. The fort served as a military and trading post for the British in the area. It was also used as a jail from 1812 to 1828. The fort was abandoned in 1829 and its cannons were removed to London, England for use against the American Revolutionary War forces there. In 1865, Fort Thomas became part of the newly created United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1881, it was moved to what is now cadet barracks on campus. In 1912, it became home to the first women cadets at West Point. From 1923 until its closure in 1969, Fort Thomas housed Army Training School No.1 (ETSA) during World War II. After ETSA's closure, the fort reverted back to civilian hands and played no significant role again until 2001 when it reopened as a museum showcasing Kentucky history with an emphasis on Ft.Thomas' role within Kentucky's military during both world wars and later years of American history TodayFort Thomas is a popular tourist destination with over 300 visitors per day taking advantage of its many attractions including its USS Constitution Museum which tells the story of that ship from her construction through her service during both World Wars I and II; its visitor center which includes an exhibit on artillery ammunition storage; its reconstructed garrison buildings; and two restaurants/bars open daily into summertime serving up delicious food while you watch live events outdoors such as softball games or concerts being held on site
The first permanent white settlement in the area now known as Fort Thomas was erected on the site of present-day downtown by Captain James Robertson in 1776. The town came to be named for Colonel Robert Fortieth, a Revolutionary War hero and county commissioner. A courthouse and town square were built soon afterwards, and a schoolhouse also located in the early days. In 1820, Indian Removal began, led by General Andrew Jackson, and Fort Thomas became one of the many southern Indiana villages removed westward. The fortifications at the site were abandoned in 1832 and it gradually fell into disrepair over time. In 1884, however, a group of local farmers purchased the fortification property from the government for $3 million. They rebuilt it asFort Thomas State Historic Site and turned it into a tourist attraction.
