Fort Thomas was founded in 1794 by General James Wilkinson and Lt. Colonel John Smith as a military post on the Kentucky River. The fort was named for Brigadier General Daniel Fort who, in turn, was named for George Washington. By 1800, the fort had become an important trading center due to its location on the river and its strategic importance as a route between Paris and British Canada. In 1802, Fort Thomas became an important military post when it was redesignated as Fort Donelson after Major General Andrew Donelson's successful campaign against Native Americans near Nashville, Tennessee. In 1803, the fort became embroiled in a war with Mexico over ownership of what is now Texas. In 1804-1805, Fort Donelson played a significant role in American victory over Mexican forces at San Jacinto which helped secure American dominance of Texas. During the Civil War (1861-1865), Fort Thomas served as one of five Union army camps along the eastern border of Kentucky that were used to supply Confederate soldiers with food and ammunition. The fort also housed units of the 3rd US Infantry Regiment during this time period. After the war ended, most of these soldiers returned home but some remained at Fort Thomas until its closure in 1865. The fort closed completely by 1865 and all remaining resources were sold off to pay for expenses associated with Reconstruction in America following the Civil War. Today, only traces remain of what once stood at Fort Thomas including foundation trenches and foundations around some old barracks buildings which still stand empty today; however, portions of these buildings have been reconstructed into modern day businesses such as restaurants and hotels).
