The first gun sights in Fort Thomas were a set of blacksmiths' sandals with drill holes in the toes to hold the sighting glasses. The first use of guns on this site was on October 1, 1792 when Captain James Wilkinson used a musket to shoot at a rabbit. Gunnery Sergeant Johnnie Wilkinson killed three rabbits with his rifle while stationed at Fort Thomas in 1857. In 1861, General George Armstrong Custer used his revolver to kill four Sioux Indians near present-day Guthrie, Oklahoma using what is now known as the "Custer Rifle." In 1903, Major George Witherspoon installed iron sights on two cannon on Fort Thomas Peninsula for artillery instruction. In 1918, Lieutenant Colonel Clarence Darrow installed ranges for machineguns and other artillery pieces onto the fortifications around town. On February 20th, 1942 World War II began when Japanese bombers bombed FtThomas Naval Air Station; all of the cannons and guns inside the fortifications were destroyed as result of this attack
