The history of firearms in Fort Thomas, Kentucky dates back to the early 1800s. The first guns were used by the British in their war with Spain. The fort was named for Dr. James Fort, a military physician who served in America during the Revolutionary War. In 1792, Captain George Rogers Clark visited Fort Thomas and brought over 200 rifles and pistols from England. The fort became home to the Kentucky rifle company, which was later renamed the United States Rifle Association (USRA). By 1826, there were more than 350 rifles at Fort Thomas. In 1825, General Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States. He desired to increase U.S. military power and expand its territory. As president, he ordered that all frontier posts befortified with artillery and cannons to prevent Indian attacks on American settlers and property interests within those territories boundaries. To carry out this order, General John Custer purchased two cannon from Britain for $2,000 each and moved them intoFortThomas as part of his army campaign against Native Americans in 1827-1828 known as "Custer's Raiders." On July 26, 1836, four days after Mexican President Santa Anna announced his intention to invade Texas through Mexico City via San Antonio instead of going through Veracruz via Austin due to political instability in that state caused by Anglo-American tension over slavery (specificallyqv), American forces opened fire on unarmed Mexican soldiers garrisoned at Mission San Francisco de los Alamos (now Fort Worth) near present day Arlington Heights Cemetery in Illinois because they had mistaken Santa Anna forMexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who actually rode into town disguised as a civilian wearing an American hat! "The event is best summed up with these words from one participant: “It looked like paper birdshot flying out from every direction; it seemed like we were fighting Indians rather than Mexicans”." In 1800s there were numerous Native American sightings near present day Fort Thomas including Shawnee Trail Chief Little Turtle who may have been sighting British troops raiding his village for prey settlers also began arriving around this time with some farming and construction activity taking place before being abandoned due to hard water conditions and lack of available land
