Gun parts history in Fort Thomas, Kentucky can be traced back to the early 1800s. At that time the fort was home to a regiment of United States Cavalry soldiers. The cavalry unit was known as the 1st Regiment Kentucky Mounted Volunteers and it was stationed at Fort Thomas from 1801-1802. In 1814, Colonel James Wilkinson purchased land at Fort Thomas for $9,000. He planned to build a military fortification on the site and named it after his father-in-law, General Andrew Jackson. However, Wilkinson never completed his project and the fort reverted back to Indian ownership in 1816. In 1824, General Price ordered Captain John Sweeny of the 1st Regiment Kentucky Mounted Volunteers to garrison Fort Thomas until he could find a more permanent home for his troops. Sweeny arrived at Fort Thomas in October of that year and began construction on what would become known as "The Old Blockhouse". In 1830, Major James Ladd purchasedritis property adjacent to The Old Blockhouse and started construction on what would become known as "Fort Ladd". Ladd's goal was to create an artificial harbor on the east bank of Caney Fork River so that he could trade with Native Americans and extract wood from their forests. The first building constructed on Ladd's lot was called "The Post Office" and served as headquarters for the post office department during its initial years of operation. By 1840, Confederate forces had occupied Fort Thomas and began preparations for an assault against Union forces downstream at Point Pleasant Gap. Captain John Hodge commanding Company D (the 2nd Battalion) 5th Kentucky Infantry militia decided not to deploy along with other units destined for Point Pleasant Gap because they were concerned about being surrounded by hostile Indians should they march into battle without any support from friendly forces. As a result, Company D withdrew upstream towards Cumberland Valley before setting up camp for the night near present day Clarksville Road (southwest of present day Louisville). A few hours later they heard reports from their compatriots downstream that Confederate forces had successfully assaulted Union positions at Point Pleasant Gap resulting in a large number of casualties among both sides. After conferring with his officer corps members Hodge decided against assaulting Union positions but instead retreated back towards FtThomas where he regrouped with his battalion late that evening under cover of darkness before dawn departing for Lexington early next morning.. This event is generally considered as one of the pivotal moments in Confederate strategy leading up to Battle Of Lexington which resulted in defeat overall..
