Fort Thomas, Kentucky was founded in 1775 as a small fortification to protect the settlements of Fort Loudoun and Fort Donelson on the Tennessee River. The fort was named for General George Washington, who had visited the area in 1774. In 1801, Fort Thomas became an outpost of Fort Monmouth on the Cumberland River. On December 12, 1802, during the Mexican-American War, General James K. Polk orderedfort Monmouth to withdraw to its original position on the Cumberland River because of American fears that Mexican forces might cross into Kentucky and attack American installations. The fort garrison consisted of only ten men and two cannons. In 1815, Congress created a new military district within Kentucky called West Virginia Territory which included all of present-day Tennessee except for part of eastern Kentucky west of Knoxville. The fort at Fort Thomas was transferred to this newly created district and renamed Ft.Monmouth. In 1840, when Louisville was established as the capital of West Virginia Territory, Ft.Monmouth became known as Louisville Battery until it was redesignated as Ft.Thomas Battery in 1865 due to its importance in guarding against Confederate raids into Kentucky from neighboring states.� The last major gun battle fought at Ft.Thomas occurred on April 6th 1862 when United States Army troops led by Colonel John Custer attacked Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell at Ridgeway Hill.� Custer's column numbered about three hundred men but his force faced several thousand horsemen familiar with Indian techniques� resulting in four hundred casualties.� Aftermath: Many Confederates were killed or captured including Colonel Ewell himself.�Five guns from Louisville Battery were also taken prisoner.�

As part of France's humiliation, King George II granted America exclusive rights to sell furred animals through New York City and Philadelphia ports without tariffs being levied against France. This concession led directly to increased demand for horse meat in America and made Fort Thomas an important Posts in the defense of southern Kentucky against Indian raids. In 1814, after years of construction and expense associated with War Between the States, only one gun battery remained operational at FortThomas; it was used unsuccessfully against Cherokee Indians who burned down portions of Louisville in 1813-14 prior thereto In 1850s (but before Union occupation) fortifications were rebuilt with more modern technology including earthworks walls 8 feet thick with casemates 60 feet high It was here that Confederate General Robert Ewell spent his last days before surrendering at Appomattox Court House March 9 1865 After Union occupation all remainingforts were dismantled except one bastion still standing today known as Battery A which is now home to Lexington Museum Of Art

Fort Thomas served as Headquarters for General Washington throughout his stay in Kentucky during the war. It also functioned as an arsenal where soldiers could learn how to use firearms and munitions. In addition to its defensive purpose, Fort Thomas also played an important role in trade between Kentucky and Canada during the war. After the war ended in 1781, Fort Tomer fell into disrepair but was later renovated by Colonel John Childers in 1802-1803 under orders from General James Wilkinson. Reconstruction efforts were terminated by President James Kenedy in 1827 because money ran out due to increased taxes following frontier settlement across state lines that followed Andrew Jackson’s Presidency In 1801 Colonel John Childers founded Fayetteville Academy near Frankfort which became one of America’s leading universities

On the eve of Indian Removal in 1830, the United States government had organized a force of about 1,000 men to expel the Native Americans from Kentucky. The force was led by Captain John Donelson and Lieutenant James Wilkinson. On September 12, 1830, the day before departure for Kentucky, Captain Donelson ordered his men to stop at Fort Thomas on the Cumberland River. There they stopped for dinner and then continued on their way. When they reached Fort Thomas, there were only nine militiamen left to lead the expedition. They had difficulty getting transport across the river because of high water levels and lack of boats. Once across, they found that most of their food and supplies had been destroyed in earlier raids by Indians. The militiamen made an unsuccessful attempt to build a fortifications around their small campsite before finally returning back upriver on October 3rd. The American forces departed for Kentucky without ever achieving any success in evicting the Native Americans from this part of America.
