The first gun lights were used in Fort Thomas, Kentucky in 1848. The gunsights were made of brass and were installed on the muzzle ends of artillery cannons to help guide the rounds to their target. These gunsights helped ensure that soldiers could hit their targets with ease. In 1857, a new system was created for using gun lights. This system consisted of a metal arm that was attached to the barrel of an artillery cannon. This arm would be able to point directly at the target and allow the soldier behind it to shoot accurately without having to aim. This new system became known as “the cross-barred sight” and it allowed soldiers behind thearmy cannon to fire more accurately by pointing their sights directly at the target instead of havingto aim through a cross-barrier. In 1907, Fort Thomas become one of only two military installations in America which used gaslights for night time shooting. The other installation was located at Camp Polk in Florida. Gaslights remained in use until 1945 when they were replaced by electronic night sights

Fort Thomas was founded in 1775 by General George Washington as a military post on the Cumberland River. The fort was named for the Thomas family, who donated land for the fort. The first commander of Fort Thomas was Major George Hearn. In 1778, Fort Thomas became the capital of Kentucky and held this title until 1802 when Frankfort took over. In 1840, Fort Gibson was built to protect the city of Louisville from Indian attacks. The fort also served as a prison from 1849 to 1865. The fort is now a museum and is open to the public every day except Sunday. It is one of only two remaining U.S.-held posts west of Mexico City that still maintain certain aspects of their original design and construction while also displaying some current technology. The other is Fort Polk in Louisiana which has been closed since 1993 due to damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. The fort contains an extensive collection of American Revolutionary War era artifacts including cannons, uniforms, documents, paintings, sculptures and more. There are also several exhibits about local history such as pioneer life and how it influenced later generations at FortThomasMuseum . Fort Thomas was a small fortification built by the United States in 1814 on the eastern bank of the Ohio River, about 25 miles north of Cincinnati, Ohio. The fort was abandoned in 1815 and is now a National Historical Park. The site of Fort Thomas was selected for its strategic location close to both Indian Territory and Kentucky's major rivers. The fortifications were completed in less than two months and were manned only by a few soldiers. In February 1814, General James Wilkinson ordered Colonel Isaac Ross to build a small stockade around the fort. This stockade served as an observation post for British forces besieging Fort Washington on the Monongahela River. In July 1814, Wilkinson ordered Colonel Daniel Harvey to build another stockade around the fort. This new stockade served as an encampment for American troops occupying Kentucky during the War of 1812. On October 4, 1814, while American troops were quartered at Fort Thomas, they received orders from General Winfield Scott to march southward towards Mobile Bay under cover of night to relieve British forces besieging that city. Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clarke led marches from Fort Thomas through downtown Cincinnati and into Muskingum County before reaching Mobile Bay late on October 5th without encountering any resistance from the local Native Americans or attacking French settlers living near Mobile Bay. After relieving British forces at Mobile Bay on October 11th, Scott sent his army back upriver along Alabama’s Gulf Coastal Road towards Nashville via Bowling Green where it arrived on November 3rd after spending three weeks siegeing that town].] American troops left Mobile Bay on November 17th and arrived at Louisville December 6th.]] While in Louisville, American military governor James Lane wrote to Governor Andrew Jackson recommending that he move westward “to effectually put an end to this state [Kentucky]'s being taken up by these Indians” (Lane Letters: 1). On December 15th Governor Jackson agreed to move his army westward but required Congressional approval before beginning his advance westwards.]] As part of their plans for invading Tennessee,, Federalists had hoped to take control of this important northwestern passage into Tennessee]], so when news reached Washington that General William Hardee had burned down Knoxville early in January 1865 Federalists reacted with alarm]]>]; however no Confederate forces materialized outside Knoxville until April 1865 when Union General Sherman discovered them there]]>]. Meanwhile Federalist efforts failed completely within Kentucky because most people remained loyal to President Jefferson Davis rather than Confederate generals Touchette and Polk.]]
Fort Thomas was built on the banks of the Ohio River by General Andrew Jackson in 1806. The fort served as a military post until it was abandoned in 1813. In 1865, Fort Thomas was moved to its current location and renamed Fort John Knox.
