As part of this campaign, Fort Thomas was the site of one of the most bitter battles ever fought on American soil – known today as Antietam Heights (or Battle Plateau). The fort was used both offensively and defensively during the battle; it is thought that over 100 cannon were fired from its walls against an opposing force estimated at around 25 thousand troops! Since then, FtThomas has been home to numerous military installations including Army Corps Headquarters (ARCH), Fort Knox Barracks (later Camp Atterbury), Naval Station Lexington/Fort Casey (now McCormick Place),civilian housing projects called “Fort Thomas Village” which served as a model for similar developments all over America due to its unique atmosphere and social mix among Cherokee Indians who had lived here since before European contact began; rifle ranges within easy walking distance for citizens while also providing opportunities for local hunting; exhibits on various aspects of early firearms technology displayed at various locations within town limits; currently operates two restaurants which serve food cooked by inmates working at nearby prisons.. etc…. etc….

The town prospered and grew until it reached its peak in the early 1800s when it had a population of 10,000 people. However, during the 1800s smallpox killed many people in Kentucky and Fort Thomas lost its Commerce importance. By 1900, only 2% of the population lived in Fort Thomas while 99% lived outside of it.
