Fort Thomas was established on the banks of the Ohio River in 1787 as a trading post by General George Rogers Clark. The fort was renamed Fort Knox in 1814 and became a military base during the War of 1812. It served as an outpost for operations along the Canadian frontier and played a important role in the Battle of New Orleans in 1813. In 1861, Fort Knox was abandoned and its cannons were melted down to make munitions for the Confederate army. In 1865, it was sold to businessman Elijah P. Smith for $5,000. In 1923, Smith donated all of his firearms collection to Kentucky State University’s Firearms Research Center (FRCC). FRCC has been working on restoring and maintaining this collection ever since. Today, Fort Thomas is home to many historical artifacts, including cannons from both sides of the Civil War, war medals and badges from various organizations such as the Union Army and Confederate Army, rifles from both Union and Confederate armies, photos and movies taken at various battles or events withinKentucky’s history, as well as some furniture from earlier homes around town.

Grant's Army of Northern Virginia during the War of 1812. It closed again after hostilities ended in 1815 but reopened briefly in 1819–20 under James Kenedy as part of Andrew Jackson's Expedition against Mexico City (1821). The fortifications were finally abandoned again in 1830 following Indian removal from Kentucky to Oklahoma Territory; it remains standing today as a museum open to the public. Fort Thomas was a fortification built in 1775 on the banks of the Ohio River by George Washington as part of his defense against British attacks. The fort was abandoned in 1814 and its remains are now used as a historical museum. The fort is also the site of the annual Fort Thomas Festival, which takes place in late July or early August. The first permanent settlers to what is now Kentucky were Native American Indians who called the area "the Great Miami Country." In 1607, Englishmen under Captain John Deere sailed up the Ohio River and landed at what is now Louisville, Kentucky, although they did not establish a permanent settlement. In 1775, General George Washington organized an army to fight against British forces stationed along the frontier. He decided to build a military base near present-day Fort Thomas because it would provide security for his troops and supplies moving into battle. Construction began on Fort Thomas in December of that year and it was completed by April of 1776. It was declared operational on May 24th. At its peak, Fort Thomas had twenty-five guns and fifty soldiers garrisoned there. Although Boston had been conquered by Britain during the previous year, Washington remained determined to fight back against any possible attack from Canada or Quebec City. To this end, he ordered construction of additional defenses around Fort Thomas including watchtowers and stockades. By late summer of 1776, British forces had started their advance downriver towards Cincinnati but were met with resistance at Fort Knox which prevented them from crossing over into Kentucky proper. Eventually they retreated towards Philadelphia where they lost most of their equipment and supplies before being forced back out again toward Loudoun County). A number of small skirmishes took place between American soldiers and British raiders throughout September/October but these failed to turn decisively American favor; rather than mounting an all-out assault on Canadian positions at Kingston (as many expected), General Howe instead turned his attention southwards towards Cincinnati where he hoped to bleed America dry before finally invading Pennsylvania next winter... Although some high-value captured materiel Following their retreat from Kingston Governor Vandalia set about requisitioning goods from various sources across eastern Kentucky.... For all intents purposes this campaign effectively ended with Yorktown when Lord Cornwallis surrendered Montreal Island November 19th after engaging in hand-to-hand combat with militia led by Lieutenant Colonel Forbes.-Evan Sledderer
