Bullets were first used by the United States in 1859. The First National Bank of Fort Thomas, Kentucky was the first business in town to use bullets when it started accepting deposits. The popularity of firearms and the need for accuracy led to the development of rifle powder and bullets. By 1861, rifles were being manufactured at a rate of 10,000 per day. In 1861, Fort Thomas became part of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s army and began using projectiles made by private companies in addition to Union Bullets. Bullet production increased significantly during the war because bullets could be produced faster than cannons could be built or purchased. Ammunition shortages caused much suffering on both sides and caused many casualties. In 1865, Fort Thomas surrendered and all its ammunition was destroyed as part of General Sherman’s victory over the Confederacy

Fort Thomas, Kentucky was founded in 1775 by the British as a military post on the Cumberland River. The fort became an important trading center for the area and later served as a headquarters for General George Washington during his campaigns in the Revolutionary War. The fort was destroyed by fire in 1814 and never rebuilt. Today, Fort Thomas is a small museum that offers tours of the reconstructed fort and its adjacent military buildings.

BIOT is one of only a few universities in Kentucky that has been continuously operational since 1802.
