The fortification was built on the orders of General George Washington to protect his army from possible attack by the French. In 1779, General Anthony Wayne founded Bloomington, Indiana, on present-day side of the river Blanco near what is now Louisville. The French never attacked Kentucky, but Fort Thomas continued to be used as a military stronghold until 1805 when it was surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant after battle at Tullahoma Hill. Fort Thomases history can be traced back to October 4, 1775 when British general Monck forced his way into America through Canada and made his way downriver to where he expected major American forces located at Lexington and Concord (now Boston). On October 9th Monck called upon General William Howe with news that he had encountered large American forces at Saratoga Springs (now Albany), New York; Howe Expedition ordered Major-General Georgeordered into action on October 11th; however before long reports reached headquarters that both armies had retreated without any fight or damage done excepting some lost artillery pieces which could have been quite damaging if captured by the Americans[1]. This evacuation of English troops from America prior to Clinton's Invasion demonstrated just how serious Matters were becoming within England regarding her colonies’ support for America’s cause – something that would become increasingly significant over time as Patriots increased their activities inside her borders[2]. In order to forestall such an event from happening again later that year Howe dispatched Commodore John Rodgers with a squadron of vessels under command of Captain Samuel Barron accompanied by transports HMS Constitution and HMS Prince Rupert upriver past Tuskahoma Rapids towardspresent day Lebanon Junction[3] . However upon arrival they sighted no enemy activity ashore so returned home immediately having accomplished nothing more than drawing attention away from Patriot positions near Lexington[4]. For many months following this abortive mission Commodore Rodgers patrolled these waters searching for any sign of American ships but unfortunately found nothing other than friendly natives who came aboard one of his boats while underway[5] . It wasn't until early November when word reached him via runners southward along the unguarded border between Canada and Louisiana about an impending Franco-American invasion led by Pierre François La Harpe only days distant [6] . After much deliberation Commodore Rodgers decided it would be best not to set sail since he knew there would be very little chance he could return alive should hostilities erupt; instead Admiral Graves commanding Sir Richard Lee’s Squadron Pillarhead Passage opened up en route therefore enabling them safely passage across without being seen or heard from either party[7]. Thus began “the greatest naval engagement in history” involving 100 vessels including 8 Royal Navy Ships plus 36 Continental Marines under Captain Barron who fought hand-to-hand against superior numbers over 6 hours resulting in 3 killed & 10 wounded with only 2 British sailors lost [8] . Notwithstanding this high price Commodore Rodgers returned safely home with evidence that French intentions actually lay elsewhere rather then Lexington where they believed British soldiers might be hiding…. As yet another reminder of just how serious matters had become within Britain Naval commanders felt compelled once again open up crossings even unto our dangerous northernborder thus safeguarding our seamen against potential piratical attacks

With its strategic location on both sides of the river, FortTThomas played an important role in Union strategy during the Civil War. Afterward, it reverted back to Confederate control until its fall in 1865. In 1870,FortThomas was donated to Kentucky by Samuel Prentice Chase and is now part ofthe University of Louisville campus.
