In 1898, Fort Thomas again served as an artillery post until its abandonment in 1899 due to lack of funding. The fort is now privatelyowned and open to visitors.
The town of Fort Thomas was founded in 1795 by Colonel James H. Knox as a military post on the Kentucky River. In 1802, Fort Thomas came under the jurisdiction of the Missouri Territory and in 1812 it became part of the Territory of Indian Territory. The fort was abandoned in 1825 and the site is now occupied by the nearby village of Fort Thomas.
