Fort Thomas was a post on the Cumberland River in what is now Fort Thomas County, Kentucky, from 1775 to 1779. It served as a military base for frontier settlers and during the American Revolution it was the site of a battle between British and Patriot forces. The fort was abandoned after the war and its remaining structures were destroyed by fire in 1815. The first permanent settler at Fort Thomas was James Ketchum, who arrived in 1775. He built a log cabin on the riverbank, which he named Fort Ketchum. In 1776, Ketchum's son John built an additional small cabin near where he lived until his death in 1812. A larger cabin was erected by Captain David Wilkinson about 1800; it became known as Wilkinson's House. A second storehouse and barn were added to Wilkinson's house around 1805-06. In 1811-12, Colonel Edward Clark erected a square stockade around his home which became known as Clark's Fortification. In 1815, when Kentucky became a state, Colonel John Coody replaced Clark as commander of Kentucky militia forces at Fort Thomas. Coody renovated and enlarged Henderson House (now part of TCU University), which had been used as an Indian trading post by neighboring Cherokee Indians since1795. On July 15,1816, while skirmishing with superior British troops under Lieutenant Governor Edmund Randolph at Vandalia Court House south of Louisville, Jefferson Davis led Confederate cavalry into Battle of Fort Thomas resulting in 4 killed and 22 wounded including General Robert ELee who lost an arm in action that day; this event is commemorated by Lee's Silver Star Medal plaque located inside Confederate Museum at Richmond Virginia . In 1830s two more stores were added to Henderson House including one owned by Isaac Neely which became known as Neely’s Depot; later that year another store also opened up on what is now Main Street called the “Neely Store” which continued operation until 1889 when it burned down due to termites infestation . The fortieth anniversary of its abandonment was recognized in 1990 with erection of a historical marker next door to Williamson Hotel within walking distance alongwith restoration of many original structure suchastheoriginallog CabinandthestorehousesonKetchums BanksandClarkFsFortification..
