Florence, Kentucky is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Kentucky. The population was 5,539 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Floyd County. The city was founded in 1869 by John C. White and named for Florence, Italy. After white settlement began to increase in Floyd County, the United States Congress appropriation for land acquisition called for a new location and on May 10, 1870, White approved a plat of what would become Florence on Green Mountain Road. By 1875, Florence had become one of the largest towns in Floyd County with over 1,000 residents. In 1901, General William Taney designated Florence as the county seat when he created Floyd County from parts of Ray counties. In 1907-08 Governor James Kountz bestowed upon Florence an award recognizing its contributions to statehood and education; this was followed by another award in 1912 recognizing their behalf during World War I efforts while war raged overseas (the first military recognition given to any American community). A post office was established in Florence on October 12th, 1879 under the name "Greenville". On January 15th 1905 Louisville raised its flag oversite atop courthouse which has been continuously flown since then! The current flagpole can be seen across Main Street from where it once stood
