In 2008 alone, NRA-ILA sponsored more than 100 events across America focused on gun education and recreation. Florence, Kentucky is a small town located in Pike County, Kentucky. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It is the smallest of the six towns in Pike County and it has the distinction of being one of only two communities in Kentucky that did not exist as a town when it was organized as a county in 1876. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted and gathered resources near what is now downtown Florence. Captain James Robertson founded a trading post here in 1792 and named it Fort George after his home state of Georgia. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson established headquarters here while he was on campaigns against Russia and Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early destroyed most of Fort George but continued to hold part of the fort until 1865 when Union General Ulysses S. Grant took over control. The early settlers were mainly men from Virginia who had come to seek land grants west of Cincinnati because there were no available tracts east of Cincinnati for those seeking farming or manufacturing opportunities. Many women also came here to start families and many businesses operated out of their homes which survives today such as Mrs. John Jernigan’s grocery store which still stands on Main Street
